Red flowers as far as the eye can see. A fresh, spicy fragrance in the air. Sweetish, balsamic, light and relaxed. It smells of summer, of
dolce far niente
and it hums and buzzes all around us: in Paul Peteanus’basil fields in Unterföhring near Munich. Since 2016, the agronomist has been growing the African basil
African Blue
and is the only person in the world to produce his bright red syrup from the pretty flowers of the Mediterranean herb:
Pure blossom
.
Unique, regional, sustainable
Foodie and entrepreneur Paul Petenau loves experimenting with food. He publishes his latest coups involving spices and explosions of flavor under the label
Paul’s Selections
and of course on Blütenrein, the home of red basil syrup. We also liked the fine basil blossom chocolate, which is also produced in Bavaria.
Naturally and without much fanfare, the herb lover focuses on regionality and sustainability for his products. The delicate red basil blossoms are harvested by hand, gently dried and then processed in Bavaria using a secret recipe and without any chemical additives to create a fine, spicy basil syrup.
Naturally, the syrup producer does not use any sprays or pesticides when growing the flowers. Paul Peteanu wants to sell healthy food to his customers – it’s important to him. Just like a healthy ecosystem. Day in and day out, butterflies, bees and bumblebees populate his fields, which even manage entirely without fertilizer and thus truly form a natural biotope.
In this way, the soil is not depleted and the plants still deliver high quality. Organic diversity in nature that you can taste.
Basil flower syrup & more

It is ideal for spritzers, lemonades and alcoholic mixed drinks, but also for refining salads, fish and meat dishes, vegetables and for summer desserts, sauces and marinades. There are virtually no limits to the imagination of foodies and gourmets. We have already tried the fresh Occam Sprizz (syrup, Prosecco, soda) and the quaffable Flower Fizz (syrup, gin, soda) – more recipes can be found
